There were some very special visitors in school on Thursday, Sgt David O’Flaherty and Private Eoin Stapleton arrived to present the school with the Irish flag and Proclamation of Independence to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising next year.

The youngest child in the school was presented with the National flag and the eldest child received a copy of the Proclamation of Independence.

Sgt O’Flaherty was very happy to see the half century Proclamation, which was presented 50 years ago to the school on display in our school hall.

The children had an opportunity to ask questions and as well as learning about our National flag and 1916, they learnt some very interesting facts about army life.

To round off a wonderful morning two children played “Boolavogue” on the banjo and accordion, then the children sang “Grace”, written by written by Sean and Frank O'Meara (famously performed by Jim McCann)to close the ceremony everyone stood proud and sang “Amhrán na bhfiann”.

It was a very memorable morning and we will proudly hang our newly presented national flag in March 2016 along with every other National school in Ireland.
